Clinical Risk More Important Than Bone Mineral Density In Paediatric Fractures

Bone mineral density (BMD) could be less important than clinical risk factors such as sports participation or weight and height in assessing total fracture risk in prepubertal children. Australian researchers say their sample size was limited, however, and further investigations should involve larger populations with less heterogeneity in fracture types. Investigators with the Menzies Centre of Population Health, in Tasmania, Australia, assessed BMD in lumbar spine, femoral neck and total body bone in 324 children. They used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in the assessments.
