Short-duration antibiotic treatment could be accepted as standard care for paediatric patients with acute, uncomplicated osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, Australian researchers report. Treatment of 3.5 weeks or less requires prospective evaluation, however, using a register and at least 12 months of follow-up, Australian researchers suggest.
Their retrospective chart review of 32 children with osteomyelitis — 34 with septic arthritis and five with both diseases — indicated good outcomes with short-duration antibiotics. Investigators from the University of Melbourne, in Melbourne found these median durations of antibiotic treatment: 5.4 weeks in osteomyelitis, 4.4 weeks in septic arthritis and 5.0 weeks in children with both diseases. Only 22 percent of the patients received short-duration treatment.
