In children with atopic dermatitis, the appearance of house dust mite (HDM)-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E antibodies in early childhood increases the risk of developing bronchial asthma, according to a report in the September issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. However, the asthma risk associated with HDM-specific Ig E antibodies decreases over time.
“Bronchial asthma often develops in children with atopic dermatitis,” Dr. Yusei Ohshima, of Fukui Medical University, Japan, and colleagues note. “Identification of factors that could predict development of asthma in children with atopic dermatitis is useful for early intervention.”
