Neonatal Seizures Rarely Due to Intrapartum Hypoxia

Seizures in newborns are only rarely caused by lack of oxygen during delivery, according to a report published in the August issue of the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine.

Seizures are the most common sign of neurologic problems in the first month of life. However, experts have disagreed on whether seizures result primarily from a lack of oxygen during birth or from other causes, such as fetal malformations or a genetic predisposition.
