– In arthritic children treated with methotrexate, serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels fall significantly, UK researchers report in the August issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood.
There was “a fall in IgG in methotrexate-treated patients in whom it is not raised pre-treatment,” lead author Dr. Oliver J. Rackham told Reuters Health. “The fall does not correlate with a fall in other inflammatory markers,” Dr. Rackham added.
“While the mean post-treatment level is still within normal, age-related limits, there is a small sub-group of patients with systemic disease in whom the IgG does fall to ‘sub-normal’ levels.”
