Infected parents, particularly mothers, may play a key role in the transmission of Helicobacter pylori to their children.
German researchers studied the prevalence of H. pylori in pre-school aged children and both of their parents simultaneously to determine the role of parental infection status in such transmission in a population-based study in the city of Ulm in southern Germany.
Investigators from the German Centre for Research on Aging in Heidelberg, the University of Ulm and the Public Health Service of Ulm determined infectious status using the 13C-urea breath test of 305 children aged five to seven years who were screened for school fitness between January and July 1998.
They determined parental infection status by measuring specific H. pylori IgG antibodies in saliva using a modified immunoassay.
