– Prenatal administration of phenobarbital to prevent intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) has neither beneficial nor adverse short-term effects on the neurodevelopment of preterm infants, according to data from a Neonatal Research Network study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
The research group, led by Dr. Seetha Shankaran, professor of pediatrics at Wayne State University in Detroit, earlier found that prenatal administration of phenobarbital does not reduce the risk of ICH or early death in preterm infants (see Reuters Health report, August 14, 1997).
In light of the new findings, there is “no justification for its use,” Dr. Shankaran told Reuters Health.
