The long-acting, inhaled beta2 agonist formoterol shows anti-inflammatory properties as well as bronchodilating effects in children with asthma, according to Polish researchers.
Dr. Iwona Stelmach at M. Curie Hospital, Zgierz, and colleagues note that salmeterol and formoterol have been shown to have some anti-inflammatory action, but such effects have not been studied in asthmatic children.’
To investigate, the researchers conducted a double-blind study of 34 children with moderate atopic asthma who were randomized to treatment with formoterol 12 mcg twice daily or placebo. The findings appeared in the July issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
