Increased faecal eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) could help distinguish infants with slowly evolving gastrointestinal symptoms from those who can tolerate cow’s milk.
Serial follow-up of individual ECP and immunoglobin A (IgA) can be used to estimate the degree of gut inflammation and timing of challenge tests, Finnish researchers suggest. They add that the tests are not diagnostic tools for cow’s milk allergy, however.
Investigators from the University of Helsinki’s Hospital for Children and Adolescents note that there is growing evidence that cow’s milk exposure causes gut inflammation in infants allergic to cow’s milk, irrespective of the child’s symptoms.
