Genotype Moderates Effect of Child Abuse on Adult Antisocial Behavior

By Karla Gale NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 02 –

Children who are abused during childhood and who carry a “low-activity” gene encoding monoamine oxidase A are at increased risk of committing violent crime and exhibiting other antisocial behavior, investigators report in the August 2nd issue of Science.

This form of the MAOA gene, which harbors a variable number tandem repeat polymorphism, is present in roughly one third of the general population, Dr. Terrie E. Moffitt of King’s College in London told Reuters Health. The gene is located on the X chromosome, requiring only heterozygosity in boys to affect phenotype, whereas girls would need to be homozygous to be affected.
