Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) presents differently in children than in adults and death is most often related to immunosuppression, researchers report.
NF is often misdiagnosed in children and differs in various ways to adult NF, write doctors at the Departments of Pediatric Dermatology and Research, National Institute of Paediatrics, Mexico City, Mexico. They suggest that antibiotics and early surgical debridement are the key measures for treating necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in this group of patients.
To identify the life-threatening risk factors in NF children, Dr. Antonio Fustes-Morales and colleagues designed a longitudinal retrospective, comparative and observational trial. They enrolled 39 children with clinical and/or histopathological diagnosis of NF who were seen at the dermatology department of a tertiary care paediatric hospital from January 1971 to December 2000.
