A combination of four serum markers has high sensitivity in detecting Down syndrome without increasing the rate of false-positives, Japanese researchers report.
Dr. Ritsu Yamamoto from Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Sapporo, and colleagues studied serum samples from 530 women with normal pregnancies and from 31 women who were pregnant with a Down syndrome fetus.
The samples were taken at 14 to 20 weeks of gestation. The researchers scored the sensitivity of various combinations of Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive alpha-fetoprotein ratio, alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin and unconjugated estriol to determine which was best in detecting Down syndrome.
