Desipramine effectively reduces symptoms in children with chronic tic disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a report in the July issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. Tic disorder occurs commonly with ADHD.
Previous studies have documented the benefits of desipramine treatment for ADHD, the authors explain, but results of this treatment for tic symptoms have been mixed.
Dr. Thomas Spencer from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and colleagues investigated the effects of desipramine treatment in 41 children with chronic tic disorders and ADHD in a 6-week, placebo-controlled trial.
ADHD symptoms improved significantly and progressively during the 6 weeks of treatment with desipramine, the authors report, while placebo had no effect.
