Men exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) during adolescence are less likely to have male offspring than normal, according to the results of a population-based study reported in the July 13th issue of The Lancet.
“We studied a special population, which had a prolonged and very high exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls; their exposure was from 10 to 1000 times more than what background exposure is for the regular public,” lead author, Dr. Iliana del Rio Gomez, told Reuters Health. Dr. del Rio Gomez, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and colleagues collected data on the offspring of 2061 Taiwanese men and women who were exposed to PCB contaminated cooking oil in 1979.
The researchers compared the sex ratio of offspring of exposed individuals with those of age- and sex-matched controls, using the National Household Registries of children born after 1979.
