Young children who fail to thrive may lack the normal responses to internal hunger/satiation cues.
When investigators from the University of Durham and the Medical School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England compared failure-to-thrive patients with normal-weight controls, they found 27 patients failed to react to higher-intake after being fed high-energy drinks before a meal. The controls did react.
The patients also did not increase their intake when fed low-energy drinks before a meal while the controls did so. All of the patients had community service-based diagnoses of failure to thrive. Their weight gain was in the lowest 5 percent by a ge.
