Adherence to Dietary Control of Phenylketonuria Poor in Older Children

Most older children and adolescents with phenylketonuria do not comply with recommended dietary restrictions, researchers report in the July 6th issue of The Lancet.

Dr. John H. Walter from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, UK, and colleagues collected data on 330 children with phenylketonuria from three centers in the UK and one in Australia, for the period 1994 to 2000, according to their report.

Among children younger than 10 years of age, less than 30% had median blood phenylalanine concentrations above recommended levels. However, this proportion rose to 50% among children 10 to 14 years old and to 80% for children 15 to 19 years of age, even with a more relaxed diet at old ages, Dr. Walter’s team found.
