Japanese Cedar Pollinosis Affects Many School Children

Prevalence rates of Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCP) in Japanese school children range from 13.8 to 22.9 percent and is associated with higher levels of JCP immunoglobin E antibody, say researchers in Kyoto and Osaka.

They investigated the relationship between the amount of pollen in the air, disease prevalence and sensitisation to JCP in May or June every year from 1995 to 2001. Serum and rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms were tracked in 407 to 510 school children each year.

Pollinosis was defined as JCP-IgE equal to or greater than 1.5 international units per millilitre and having any rhinoconjunctivitis symptom of three weeks or more duration in March or April. Prevalence rates of JCP-IgE equal to or greater than 1.5 IU/ml ranged from 39.0 percent to 50.1 percent. Prevalence rates of JCP-IgE equal to or greater than 15.01 IU/ml ranged from 11.4 percent to 23.2 percent.
