Pimecrolimus 1 percent cream is more effective than a conventional regimen for reducing flares in children with atopic dermatitis, according to study results presented here at the 20th World Congress of Dermatology (WCD).
The results also show that more than half of those treated with pimecrolimus cream did not require corticosteroids during the one-year study period. Dr. Ulrich Wahn, of Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, and colleagues assessed the safety and efficacy of pimecrolimus in 711 children aged two to 17 years.
Patients were randomised in a 2:1 ratio to pimecrolimus 1 percent cream or control vehicle, applied twice daily at the first signs/symptoms of atopic dermatitis and until symptoms resolved. Emollients were allowed, as were moderately potent corticosteroids for flares not controlled by the study medication.
