Percutaneous direct radionuclide cystography (PDRC), a new test for the evaluation of vesicoureteric reflux described in the July issue of Pediatric Radiology, is better at finding disease and is better tolerated by patients than the standard intravenous radionuclide study.
“[PDRC] detects reflux during the resting phase that would be missed on the indirect study and avoids doubt as to whether activity in the renal areas is due to reflux or excretion,” writes A. Graham Wilkinson from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In this study, 103 toilet-trained children, aged 2.1 to 15.6 years, had percutaneous injection of 99m-technetium-labeled radionuclide directly into the full bladder after application of anesthetic cream. A gamma camera imaged the bladder and renal areas during a five-minute rest period and during micturition.
