NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 21 –
In infants receiving high doses of recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO), high-dose oral iron supplementation does not appear to guard against iron depletion, California researchers have found.
As reported in the June Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Nidia R. Vyhmeister from Loma Linda University and colleagues compared iron sufficiency in 64 premature infants receiving 1200 IU/kg per week r-HuEPO, supplemented with enteral iron 6 mg/kg per day, their current standard dose, or 12 mg/kg per day.
