Although there has been no effective therapy for osteogenesis imperfecta, a presentation June 20 at Endo 2002, the 84th annual meeting of The Endocrine Society, suggests that pamidronate given every three months reduces fractures in children with this disease.
“Our study showed that pamidronate treatment is effective for clinical improvement and increase in bone mineral density in childhood osteogenesis imperfecta,” write Hulya Gunoz and colleagues from the I.U. Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in Turkey.
The investigators studied 15 patients (nine boys and six girls, aged 0.1-13.7 years) with osteogenesis imperfecta, eight with type I and seven with type III. All patients received pamidronate, 1-3 mg/kg/day by intravenous infusion on three consecutive days every three months, as well as daily oral supplementation with 400 IU 25-OHD3 and 50 to 75 mg/kg/day elemental calcium adjusted according to serum and urine calcium levels.
