Oral montelukast could be effective in preventing airway inflammation relapse in allergic asthmatic children occasionally exposed to short-term, relevant allergens.
Italian researchers, from the University of Verona, the University of Napoli and Institute Pio XII in Misurina, Bellunio, have reported on preliminary data from a study of 16 allergic asthmatic children. They point out that exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) levels increase in house dust mite-sensitised asthmatic children when they are exposed to house dust mite antigen. Use of inhaled steroids prevents such increases.
To evaluate whether montelukast would prevent an increase in FENO levels in participants, the children were transported to a dust mite-free residential home in Misurina, Bellunio and were re-exposed to dust mite allergens uupon their return to their sea-level homes.
