NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 10 –
The incidence of esophageal candidiasis in HIV-infected adults has declined since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and results of a new study show a similar trend in HIV-infected children, with one caveat.
According to Dr. Thomas J. Walsh of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda and colleagues, esophageal candidiasis persists in a subgroup of children with HIV infection who fail to respond to HAART. These children may present without concurrent oropharyngeal candidiasis or other typical clinical symptoms.
