Lead author Dr. Christine L. M. Joseph, from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, told Reuters Health that “low birth weight is more prevalent in African Americans when compared to Caucasians, as is asthma.
We wanted to see if the racial difference observed in asthma prevalence for a middle income population could be explained by low birth weight.” Accordingly, the researchers, from Detroit and elsewhere, examined clinical and survey data from a sample of 126 suburban schoolchildren between 6 and 8 years of age.
Asthma was reported by 12.5% of the African Americans versus 5.3% in those from other racial groups. Low birth weight was also more common. The incidence in African Americans was 16.6% versus 3.9% in other racial groups.
The adjusted odds ratio for being African American and having asthma was 1.8 and for being of low birth weight and having asthma was 5.1. The results, Dr. Joseph continued, “suggested that 30% of the asthma in our study could be .
