Many children are at risk of skin cancer because of suboptimal use of sun-screens, high rates of sunburn and use of tanning beds.
American researchers evaluated sun protection in 10,079 children, aged 12 to 18 years, in 1999. Participants were the children of women who took part in the Nurses’ Health Study II and came from all 50 states.
“Recommendations in the United States for improved sun protection and avoidance of tanning beds and sunburning, which began in the early 1990s, have been primarily unheeded,” they explain.
Investigators from Boston University, Harvard Medical School, the Dana Farber Cancer Centre, all in Boston Massachusetts, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia say preventing skin cancer requires a long-term, sustained effort: “Nationally coordinated campaigns must be developed and sustained to prevent skin cancer in a new generation of children and adolescents.”
