Eleven new risk factors that are associated with hearing loss in neonates have been identified. These factors are length of stay in the intensive care unit, respiratory distress syndrome, retrolental fibroplasia, asphyxia, meconium aspiration, neurodegenerative disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, drug and alcohol abuse by the mother, maternal diabetes, multiple births and lack of prenatal care.
These new risk factors were identified in a prospective study conducted by investigators from University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Virginia, the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and Hermann Hospital Audiology in Houston, Texas, United States.
Consecutively born neonates were prospectively screened for hearing loss. Potential risk factors that were assessed included those already recognized by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing as well as additional factors believed to have possible significance.
