An association with extra-respiratory symptoms such as abdominal pain, itching and urticaria could be an emerging characteristic of paediatric asthma.
Researchers from the University of Rome, the Italian National Research Council in Rome and Children’s Hospital G. Di Cristina in Palermo, Italy, have found these symptoms were associated with asthma in children in two population-based surveys conducted six years apart.
They suggest the finding indicates a global approach is increasingly required in caring for asthmatic children. The first survey, carried out in 1992, included 1,262 students (651 boys; mean age 9.57 years).
The second survey, in 1998, included 1,210 children (639 boys, mean age 9.02 years). Participants were drawn from two elementary and two junior high schools in Rome.
The investigators found 11.9 percent of children participating in the two surveys had a history of asthma. After adjusting for gender, family history of atopic disease, low birthweight, early respiratory problems and damp houses, they found asthma was significantly associated with recurrent abdominal pain (odds ratio [OR]: 1.90), itching (OR: 3.15) and urticaria (OR: 2.52).
