Patients with unconfirmed diagnosis of aseptic meningitis syndrome may have enteroviral or leptospiral aetiologies, suggest Brazilian researchers.
The researchers, from the Couto Maia Hospital, the Infectious and Parasitic Disease Reference Centre for Salvador, Bahia, studied the causes of aseptic meningitis syndrome (ASM).
The study was designed to identify the frequency with which enterovirus, leptospiras, arbovirus cause the syndrome during non- epidemic periods.
They also sought to compare patients with and without laboratory proof of an aetiologic agent.
One hundred and twelve patients, aged three months to 15 years, referred to their hospital with a clinical suspicion of AMS participated in the study.
Viral infections among 50 of the patients (44.6 percent) were confirmed by laboratory findings. The aetiologic agent was confirmed as the enterovirus in 37.7 percent (n=42) by the PCR Amplicor diagnostic kit, cerebrospinal fluid or faecal culture isolation.
