NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 24 –
A training program geared to help parents interact with their preschool children who have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unsuccessful among mothers who themselves have high levels of ADHD symptoms.
This finding suggests that maternal ADHD symptoms need to be controlled before parental programs for ADHD can be effective, UK researchers report. Writing in the June issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr. Edmund J. S. Sonuga-Barke and colleagues, from the University of Southampton, describe the results of an 8-week parental training program given by mothers to 83 children, 3 years of age, who had
ADHD.
