Myelination and myelination milestones can be detected in numerous gray and white matter structures in the brains of very preterm infants, allowing for delays to be detected even in extremely young children, suggest researchers from the Imperial College, London, England.
Using a magnetic resonance (MR) imager in a neonatal intensive care unit, Serena J. Counsell and colleagues in diverse specialties conducted imaging in 26 infants. The children had a median gestational age of 28 weeks and normal neurodevelopment outcomes at two years corrected age.
As well as assessing myelination development in the preterm brain, the research team compared the ability of different imaging techniques to show myelination. These were T1-weighted conventional spin-echo, inversion recovery fast spin-echo and T2-weighted fast spin-echo MR imaging.
