Preventive Measures Needed To Counter Rise In Scooter Related Injuries Among Children

05/21/2002 By Veronica Rose

Children who use scooters need head, facial, wrist and ankle protection, advise Swiss paediatricians.

In addition, a program aimed at reducing both the number and severity of these incidents is needed.

Specialists from the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne, noted the rise in popularity of scooters and an associated rise in the incidence of injuries.

They reviewed the files of all children who attended at this hospital, from January 2000 to February 2001, with scooter related injuries. Of 156 cases recorded, 48 percent were aged 10- 13 years, and 66.6 were boys. The incidence peaked in September and October.
