NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – Infants and children hospitalized with lower respiratory tract infections due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) rarely have concurrent serious bacterial infections and therefore do not need antibiotic therapy, results of a retrospective study indicate.
"Unfortunately it is very common to use broad-spectrum IV antibiotics in these children, particularly when they are admitted to the hospital," lead author Dr. Jaime Fergie, of Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, told Reuters Health. "Hopefully our article will help in decreasing some of the overuse of antibiotics."
