A combination of artesunate and amodiaquine appears to be an efficaceous treatment option for children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
Efficacy of adding artesunate to amodiaquine is shown in three randomised trials in Kenya, Sénégal, and Gabon directed by Dr Bob Taylor from the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, and collaborating colleagues in Europe and Africa.
The three trials were among 941 children (400 in Kenya, 321 in Sénégal, and 220 in Gabon) who were ten years of age or older, and who had uncomplicated P falciparum malaria. They were randomly assigned amodiaquine (10 mg/kg per day) for three days, plus artesunate (4 mg/kg per day) for three days, or the amodiaquine dosage plus placebo for three days.
