More children in the United States are being exposed to clonidine and, possibly, clonidine overdoses. More children also seem be experiencing toxic effects from therapeutic levels of the drug.
Some of the toxic effects can be serious, even fatal, say researchers from the Maryland Poison Centre at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, United States. They suggest all three facets of clonidine exposure among children are a cause for concern.
Management of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common off-label indication for use of clonidine in children, investigators note. They say ADHD occurs in 3 to 6 percent of school-aged children.
