Injection of the neuromuscular blocking agent botulinum toxin type A in spastic elbow flexors reduces voluntary activity in this muscle group and is also associated with a mild decrease of voluntary extensor activity during self-paced movements of elbow extension.
Patients with paresis due to damage of the central motor pathways are functionally affected by weakness, muscle overactivity, and muscle shortening, with imbalance between agonists and their antagonists, according to Dr. Jean-Michel Gracies, with Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, New York, United States.
