Arthroscopic surgery is a safe and effective treatment for dorsal wrist ganglia, including those that have recurred after previous open surgery.
Dr. Jui-Tien Shih and colleagues at the Armed Forces Taoyuan General Hospital, in Taiwan, performed arthroscopic surgery on 20 men and 12 women with a dorsal wrist ganglion, who were treated between September 1997 and September 2000.
Five of the patients (15.6 percent) had experienced a recurrence following previous treatment with open surgery, the researchers report. All patients complained of pain or a cosmetic problem due to the lump. Before arthroscopic resection, each patient was sonographically examined using a high-resolution 7.5 MHz real-time probe. All patients were followed-up by telephone interview 15 to 37 months (mean 26.8 months) following treatment. None of the patients experienced a recurrence of their dorsal wrist ganglion, the investigators reported.
