American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: First Fracture May Be Warning Sign To Big Trouble Later In Life

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, (AAOS), physicians need to discuss the significance of fractures with their patients, and the role they play in fractures later in life.

Speaking at the Academy’s Orthopaedics Update meeting, Laura Lowe Tosi, MD associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., “Osteoporosis is a

condition often associated with postmenopausal women and certain categories of athletes.

However, anyone who has sustained a fracture should be aware of the risks associated with the possibility of a second more serious fracture in the future. “People who have had a fracture in the past, need to have routine tests to check bone density status as well as a blood test to check for other underlining conditions. Orthopaedic surgeons should view fractures as an early warning signal to a more serious condition such a hip or vertebral fracture when dealing with older patients,” added Dr. Tosi.
