An oxygen-carrying solution of polymerized bovine hemoglobin reduces the need for allogeneic blood transfusion in orthopedic surgery patients, according to the findings of a phase III trial.
However, serious adverse effects appear to be more frequent in patients receiving bovine hemoglobin than in those receiving regular transfusions. Dr. Jonathan S. Jahr from the department of anesthesiology, University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues presented the findings here at the American Society of Anesthesiologists 55th Annual Meeting.
The researchers evaluated HBOC-201 (Hemopure, Biopure Corporation), glutaraldehyde polymerized bovine hemoglobin, in a randomized trial involving 688 orthopedic surgery patients.
