Two new molecular markers of type II collagen metabolism help detect patients at high risk for rapid progression of osteoarthritis of the knee, according to a report in the October issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.
Knee destruction in osteoarthritis is thought to reflect an imbalance between collagen synthesis and degradation. Serum levels of N-propeptide of type IIA procollagen (PIIANP) reflect type II collagen synthesis, while urinary excretion of C-terminal crosslinking telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) reflects type II collagen degradation.
