Findings from a new study suggest that nearly 10% of spinal cord injuries are missed on initial work-up. That figure represents an increase from 4% in a study carried out more than 20 years ago, despite advances in the management of trauma patients.
Several factors, including the ability of the patient to walk, contributed to the high miss rate. But according to the investigators, everyone who is involved in a high-speed car accident, regardless of their ability to walk, should be assessed for a spinal cord injury.
