Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a significantly higher risk of fractures, researchers from the UK and the Netherlands reported this week.
Dr. Tjeerd-Pieter van Staa, with the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, and colleagues, conducted a case-control study to evaluate the risk of fracture in IBD patients. They presented their findings at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).
The case patients were 18 years of age or older who had a fracture at any site documented in their medical records. Control patients were age- and sex-matched adults with no history
of fracture. A total of 231,778 patients in the study population had a fracture.
