Liver Transplantation Recipients May Be At High Risk of Osteoporosis and Vertebral Fractures

Liver transplantation recipients appear to have a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, accelerated bone turnover, and may be at high risk of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures.

 Dr. A. Fahrleitner at Karl Franzens University in Graz, Austria, and colleagues studied 15 patients (10 male, five female) from 14 to 26 months after receiving orthotopic liver transplantation.

 All patients were receiving immunosuppressive therapy and none were on calcium and/or vitamin D supplements at the time of admission to the researchers’ osteoporosis outpatient clinic. The patients underwent bone densitometry measurement at the femoral neck, a standardized spinal X-ray and a morning blood sample.
