Among children diagnosed with transient synovitis of the hip (“irritable hip”), treatment with ibuprofen significantly reduces the duration of symptoms, according to the results of a small randomized trial.
Dr. Susan Kermond and colleagues from the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, randomly assigned 40 children with transient synovitis of the hip to ibuprofen syrup 10 mg/kg 3 times daily for 5 days, or to placebo.
Thirty-six patients completed the trial. Among the 17 patients in the ibuprofen group and the 19 in the placebo group, all had resolution of symptoms within 7 days. However, patients receiving ibuprofen had a median duration of symptoms was 2 days in the ibuprofen group compared with 4.5 days in the placebo group (p = 0.05), according to the report in the September issue of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
