During adolescence, a substantial decline in physical activity occursamong girls, particularly among black girls, according to a new report. In fact, their levels of physical activity drop by nearly two-thirds or more by the age of 16 or 17 years.
“There is this dramatic change taking place during the teenage years” where girls “become completely sedentary after school,” lead study author Dr. Sue Y. S. Kimm, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, told Reuters Health.
“These findings should sound an alarm, given the current epidemic of obesity,” Dr. Kimm and her colleagues write in the September 5th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
