Three Days Needed Following Limb Revascularization before tissue perfusion sufficient for foot salvage surgery

For most patients with severe foot ischaemia, at least three days are needed following limb revascularization before tissue perfusion is sufficient for performing foot salvage surgery.

 C.I. Arroyo and colleagues at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, conducted a clinical study to determine how soon oxygen perfusion in the ischemic foot becomes adequate for healing following bypass surgery.

 The study included 11 patients with severe foot ischaemia. Severe ischaemia was defined by having a transcutaneous oxygen tension of 30 mm Hg or less. Transcutaneous oxygen tension measurements were taken prior to the lower extremity bypass and at one, two, and three days following the procedure.
