Frequent and complex ventricular tachyarrhythmias are commonly seen in trained athletes. However, if there are no underlying cardiovascular abnormalities, these conditions should not disqualify an athlete from competitive sports, according to a report in the August 7th issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Alessandro Biffi from the Institute of Sports Science, Rome, and colleagues evaluated 355 male and female competitive athletes with ventricular arrhythmias using 24-hour Holter ECG monitoring. The subjects had three or more premature ventricular depolarizations (PVDs) on resting 12-lead ECG, a history of palpitations, or both.
