In postmenopausal women, treatment with subcutaneous estrogen implants produces an increase in bone formation markers and bone mineral density (BMD), according to a recent report.
Previous reports have suggested that such implants may have an anabolic effect on bone. However, while it has been shown that long-term implant therapy can increase BMD, relatively few studies have addressed the effect of such treatment on markers of bone turnover.
Dr. R. Eastell and colleagues, from the University of Sheffield in the UK, assessed the bone-related outcomes of 21 hysterectomized postmenopausal women who were randomized to receive estrogen implants or undergo a sham procedure. The implants contained 25 mg of estradiol and were placed at baseline and again at 6 months.
