Once Weekly Risedronate Increases Bone Mineral Density In Osteoporosis And Osteopenia Patients

Bone mineral density (BMD) can be increased in patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia with risedronate, 30 mg once weekly, alone or with other antiresorptive agents.

In a study of 70 patients, few adverse events were associated with this therapy, says Dr. M. S. Gordon at Harvard Medical School, Boston and University School of Medicine, Pennsylvania, United States. Subjects with osteoporosis or osteopenia were given a once-weekly 30-mg regimen of risedronate before breakfast.

Supplemental vitamin D and 1,500 mg of calcium daily were also given to all patients and those receiving other antiresorptive agents were included in the study.
