ORLANDO, FL — July 8, 2002 —
The outcomes of surgical repair to a ruptured Achilles tendon are similar to those of a nonoperative technique using functional bracing, according to Alexandra Kirkley, MD, and colleagues from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.
The study was presented at the 28th Annual Meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) held in Orlando, Fla., June 30 – July 3, 2002.
“The research we’ve done indicates that a ruptured Achilles tendon may do just as well with functional bracing and no surgery as with surgery followed by functional bracing. However, additional research is needed before we can make clinical recommendations,” said Dr. Kirkley in a separate interview.
