The ankle brachial index, a noninvasive in-office test for lower-extremity ischaemia, also reliably identifies abnormal lower-extremity function.
A multicentre trial, the Walking and Leg Circulation Study in the United States, has found this index is more closely linked with leg function in people with peripheral arterial disease than is intermittent claudication or other leg symptoms.
This cross-sectional study, led by Dr Mary McDermott from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and Catholic Health Partners, Chicago, Illinois, is one of the first to describe the link between the ankle brachial index (ABI) and lower-extremity function. Seven hundred and forty people participated in this three-centre study, 460 of whom had peripheral arterial disease.
